Environment Canada has issued a Yellow Level Extreme Cold Warning for our City. Extreme cold temperatures are expected to begin today, with wind chills reaching -33 overnight.
Be alert for cold-related symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle aches or weakness, and numbness or colour changes in fingers and toes. Dress warmly; frostbite can occur within minutes on exposed skin, especially in windy conditions. Check on older adults, and remember: if it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for your pets.
Snow is also expected to begin Sunday morning, with up to 25 cm forecast. Slippery road conditions and limited visibility are possible. Consider postponing any non-essential travel until conditions improve.

The Significant Weather Declaration declared on January 15, 2026, has officially ended. We thank the Operations staff who continue to work around the clock to clear our roads and help keep our streets safe.
The winter weather continues! During a winter event, remember not to park on City streets. Parking restrictions run from November 15 to April 15 every year. These temporary restrictions help ensure that snow can be removed quickly and efficiently, keeping streets safe and accessible for residents, service vehicles, and emergency responders. Safety alert from the office of the Fire Chief: Inspect the door from the garage to the interior of your house.
Markham Fire and Emergency Services has seen a rise in garage fires. This carries the risk of a fire rapidly spreading from an attached garage to the interior of the home. A closed door between the garage and the home will create a barrier to slow the spread of fire and smoke. However, the door will only be effective if it is working and installed in the way it was designed.
Take a moment to check that the door:
- Is undamaged
- Swings into the house and not into the garage
- Has a latch and is secured when closed
- Has a working self-closing device so that it closes automatically when you release it

Snow Blower Etiquette Reminder! As you’re clearing your driveway or sidewalk, please remember not to blow snow back onto the road.
When snow gets pushed onto streets that have already been plowed, it can:
- Force road crews to redo work, slowing down clean up for the entire community
- Create slippery, unsafe conditions for drivers
- Reduce visibility for everyone on the road Blow snow onto your own property, not the street.

|
|
In an emergency, every second counts. There are over 8,500 fire hydrants in Markham. We need your help to keep fire hydrants accessible, whether near your home or down the street.
- Remove any snow from the hydrant
- Clear enough to walk around it (about 1-meter)
- Clear a path from the hydrant to the street

In 2024, following suggestions from residents, my office requested that the York Region Transportation review the intersection of Woodbine Avenue and Markland Street / Calvert Road for a left-turn signal.
After an on-site assessment, the department confirmed the need for a left-turn signal to reduce heavy left-turn queues. As of December 17, 2025, the left-turn signals at this intersection have been successfully installed for the northbound, southbound, and eastbound.
For suggestions regarding traffic signals on Regional roads, please contact my office at alan.ho@markham.ca |

Let’s celebrate the beauty of winter. When snow falls, remember to shovel early and often if you are able. This way the sun can melt any ice and you won’t need to use as much winter salt. Too much winter salt can contaminate our Drinking Water supply.
