Bicycle Safety Tips (For cyclists):

Helmets are the law for riders 18 years old and under, but safety looks smart at every age. An approved bicycle helmet can greatly reduce the risk of injury or death in the event of a fall or collision.

Cyclists should always signal their movement at intersections and before changing lanes, including while passing moving or parked vehicles. Cyclists should signal early enough to allow other road users time to react. Before making your turn, check over your shoulder and make eye contact with motorists and other road users.

Your bike is just like any other vehicle out on the road. If you're taking your bike to the streets, you need to obey the rules of the road. Follow the direction indicated by all traffic lights and road signs.

Cyclists, while moving slower than traffic, should keep to the curb lane whenever possible, unless you are passing other vehicles, following a bike lane or preparing to make a turn from another lane

While in the curb lane, you should keep to the right when possible, though hazards such as potholes, sewer grates or debris may force you to take a lane. Do not sacrifice your safety for the convenience of motorists behind you - they must wait until it's safe to pass.

Never cycle with headphones or earbuds - you need to be able to hear what is going on around you. Never hold a cell phone and electronic devices distract and cause delayed reaction time.

Did you know that the City of Markham’s urban forest encompasses approximately 20% of the City’s landscape?

Trees and green space play an essential role in our everyday lives. That is why the City is currently developing an Urban Forest Management Plan (UFMP).

To help form this plan, we are asking Markham residents to complete the Urban Forest Management Survey: markham.ca/Trees.

Water restrictions are in effect from June 1 to Sept. 30. During summer months, outdoor water use increases.

To ensure a constant supply of water for everyone, Markham limits residential watering of lawns and gardens. You can water between 6-9AM and 6-9PM on the following days:

- Even-numbered addresses on even-numbered days.

- Odd-numbered addresses on odd-numbered days.

Did you know? Nördlingen, Germany is Markham’s sister city? In 2001, a cultural agreement was signed and since then, our relationship has continued.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, August 31 at 4 PM, because 69 of their young musicians will perform with the Markham Concert Band at the Unionville Bandstand.

Let’s give them a warm Markham welcome as they take to the stage to perform!
