Dear Ward 2 residents,
 
Many residents and dog owners have been telling me how much they appreciate the newly introduced off-leash dog park at Victoria Square Park. However, there are still regular reports in our neighbourhoods on dogs being off-leash in public, violating our by-law and risking the safety of others, especially young children. If this topic of off-leash dog parks interests you, please join our public open house event at the Civic Centre on May 21st, 6-8pm. Please see below for more information.

New Traffic Management Measures – Markham Civic Centre, Flato Markham Theatre and Unionville High School Parking Lot Access 

From May 15 to 30, 2024 between the hours of 8 to 9 AM and 2:30 to 3:30 PM (Monday to Friday only), we ask that all high school-related traffic enter the parking lot from Wallis Way.

All other visitors to the Markham Civic Centre and Flato Markham Theatre are recommended to enter the parking lot from Cox Blvd and Town Centre Blvd during these times.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation as we aid traffic flow and continue to prioritize everyone’s safety.

Embracing and empowering the community, we welcomed over five million digital and in-person visits to the Markham Public Library while issuing 8,127 Youth Cards that provide fine-free, equitable access to library content!

- Community Event -
Do you have any used board games or jigsaw puzzles at home that are still in good condition but no longer needed? You can donate them to Markham Public Library’s Big Book Sale to help us raise funds to support the library. 
All exhibition spaces at the Varley Art Gallery will be closed from May 6 to 24, 2024, for the installation of its 2024 Summer Exhibitions To Go Boldly and Summer Solstice.  
 
All other gallery spaces, including lobby, art studios, and rental spaces, will maintain regular public hours.

Are you due for a measles vaccine but don’t have access to vaccines through a health care provider?
 
York Region offers a free measles (MMR) vaccine to residents aged 12 months and older who are eligible or overdue. 
 
 
You can also get vaccinated at a walk-in medical clinic. 
York Region Children’s Services new 2024 to 2027 Child Care and Early Years Service System Plan has been approved by Regional Council!
 
This Plan will help guide the work of the Region and other organizations to support children, from birth to age 12, and their families. It will strengthen the Region’s partnership and collaboration with other service providers and expand the child care and early years sector to ensure services are accessible, high-quality and welcoming to all children and families.

- Councillor Lau in the Community -
Councillor Ritch Lau hosted a public information meeting for a new six-storey condo proposal in Markham Ward 2 (3009 Elgin Mills Rd E). Nearly 50 residents attended. Representatives from Ledgemark Home, city planning staff, heritage staff, and an environmental engineer were present to answer questions.
 
This proposal will go to the Council Development Services Committee in early June. 
Taste of Asia 2024 is coming! Councillor Ritch Lau is delighted to represent the City of Markham and be the Emcee for this special reception at Parliament Hill. Councillor Lau and all the volunteers have been working hard in Ottawa with FCCM to promote Markham and to make sure everyone is ready for the best food fest on June 28-30th outside Pacific Mall at Kennedy & Steeles. See you there!
